Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)

  • Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle manual treatment technique used to move and reroute protein rich fluid from the interstitial tissue of the arms, legs, and trunk back to the venous system. MLD is one of the components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) in the treatment of lymphedema.
  • Dr. Margaret Latham is certified to provide effective MLD. She has also developed a sequence of full body MLD techniques Lymphatic Wellness Massage to help clients with an intact lymphatic system receive the wellness benefits of MLD including relaxation and pain relief.
The general effects of MLD include
  • Soothing (through the general parasympathetic effect)
  • Pain relief (analgesia through the gate control effect)
  • Increase in venous return
  • Helps break up fibrotic areas (fibrinolytic)
  • Increase in lymph production as protein rich fluid is moved into the lymphatic system
  • Stimulates an increase in local sympathetic response and contraction of the lymph vessel smooth muscle
  • Increase in the speed of lymph flow (angiomotoricity)
  • Reversal and rerouting of lymph flow
  • Creates a suction effect on distal lymph collectors
