Management (CLT ALM)
Lymphedema is the collection of protein rich fluid in the interstitial tissue (between the skin and the muscle fascia). It can have many causes, but in the Western world of today the most common causes are the destruction or removal of lymph nodes and vessels due to cancer surgery and radiation or the disease process of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). Blue Lotus therapists provide advanced lymphedema management.
Breast cancer survivors are especially familiar with the condition that commonly affects their arm(s) on the side of lymph node removal. Lymphedema can also be caused by a defect in the lymphatic system of the body which may be acquired or be present at birth. Even if the defect is present at birth, the symptoms usually do not develop until later in life. Lymphedema cannot be cured, but instead involves a life-long process of keeping the swelling from starting or keeping it under control
Dr. Margaret Latham is a licensed physical therapist that has advanced certifications (CLT-LANA, ALM) for the treatment of lymphedema. The process of treatment involves the use of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). Clients receive education so that they can manage the condition themselves with appropriate techniques and compression. Excellent information about lymphedema is available from The Lymphedema Treatment Act and Step Up, Speak Out.
